The Drucker Foundation : The Community of the Future
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (April, 2000)
Authors: Richard Beckhard, Marshall Goldsmith, Richard Beckhard, and Richard F. Schubert
Average review score:

Community will determine the future quality of our lives.
Before WW I, fewer that 5% of the population lived in a city. Today in developed countries, less that 5% live in a rural area. All of this has occured in less than 100 years.

The key to survival and health of this new urban society is the development of communities in the city, by non-profit social sector insititutions, according to Peter Drucker.

Human beings need community. If no communities are available for constructive ends, there will be destructive communities, i.e. gangs to fill the void.

This thoughtfully written, well organized book is about the future -- the future quality of our lives. In "The Community of the Future", the editors have gathered the wisdom and insights from 31 distinguished authors, from around the world, to discuss their unique perspective on the nature of community.

The book is divided into six sections: * Trends Shaping the Evolution of the Community * The Values of Community * The Impact of New Communication Technology * Creating Community in Organization * Strengthening the Social Fabric * Global Dimensions of Community.

If you are interested in creating the future, strengthening our communities and improving our understanding of our world, I highly recommend "The Community of the Future".

Building the global community of the future is not the work of tomorrow. We are each called to build it today -- to build it now.

class act
i had the pleasure of speaking with earnie the other night on the phone. he truly is a class act and a true gentleman. he had fights with many of the classic names of the 70s muhammad ali, larry holmes, jimmy young, ken norton, jimmy ellis, jerry quarry, roy tiger williams and many more.

he tells me he has a very successful marketing company in the states now, and suprisingly said don king was a good guy and not to believe what ' all those guys say'. we spoke about his old peers like candy slim jeff merritt whos in bad shape these days and the fearsome roy tiger williams who is now a mr nice guy and a singer with larry holmes in philly.

its great how many of these old warriors are doing okay for themselves now. best wishes to 'my mate' earnie, i cant wait to get the book of you persoanlly, i have no doubt its another classic like the books by larry holmes, joe frazier, quick tillis and george foreman.

Energetic Meetings: Enhancing Personal & Group Energy & Handling Difficult Behavior
Published in Paperback by Jemel Pub House (October, 1994)
Author: Jeanie Marshall
Average review score:

Sound, step-by-step guidance for positive meetings
Are you a beleagured group leader, suffering from energy lag, tough-to-handle participants, miscommunication, and/or confusion of purpose? If so, Jeanie Marshall's "Energetic Meetings" is for you. Weighing in at a little over 100 pages, this user-friendly volume is packed with bright ideas for handling all manner of meeting difficulties respectfully, effectively and with grace. "Energetic Meetings" is intended for gatherings of every stripe, including staff meetings, management meetings, corporate retreats, committee meetings, training programs, political gatherings, networking sessions, religious groups, and family pow-wows. Whether it's two people getting together to complete a class assignment, or a group of 300 assembling to decide the future of a major organization, Jeanie maintains that the same principles of mutual empowerment and skillful management of group energy apply. Her essential premise is "that the whole universe is composed of energy. Every person and every thing...is part of a whole, interconnected by a field of energy that is invisible to ordinary eyesight." This premise is not new. It is the foundation of Eastern mysticism, and has been popularized in the West by Fritzjof Capra ("The Tao of Physics"), Deepak Chopra ("Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine"), and many others. But what is new in Jeanie's presentation of this concept is its practical application to ordinary human interactions. Challenging us to go beyond old beliefs in competition, hierarchical structure, power over others, and other limiting concepts that are seen as major barriers to meaningful communication and decision-making, she provides the stepping stones to the New Paradigm in which "we allow life to happen, with a maximum of joy and a minimum of control and struggle. We receive instead of take. We collaborate instead of compete. We believe in abundance instead of lack. We seek to empower ourselves and to facilitate others' empowerment, instead of trying to take control. We put more faith in the invisible than in the visible. We know that we are interconnected. We trust our intuition." "Energetic Meetings" offers sound, step-by-step guidance for creating a positive meeting environment, for encouraging positive group interactions, and for addressing difficult behaviour such as domination, information-withholding, and argumentativeness. Chances are good that if a facilitator follows Jeanie's directives for setting the stage for a meeting, the difficult behaviour that plagues so many gatherings will occur far less frequently, if at all. Attentive readers will not be deceived by the simplicity and clarity of Jeanie's words, but will note that she is challenging group leaders and participants to leap far beyond their current beliefs about themselves and about how things work. In her generous, open-hearted, and gentle manner, Jeanie is urging all of us to operate from our highest intention and deepest integrity. Nothing less will do.

Engaging With God: A Biblical Theology of Worship
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (March, 1993)
Authors: David Peterson and I. Howard Marshall
Average review score:

One of the few true Biblical Theologies on the topic
In preparing to develop and teach a theology of worship for our church's Sunday School, I have of late accumulated a large number of works on the topic which provide some rudimentary background and systematic foundation, only to turn and focus primarily on practical methodology. I have also found a fair number of writings with 'an agenda'...several appear to have been intended to rebut a recent argument or conflict.

What has been sorely lacking is a balanced and sound exegetical development of a Biblical theology of worship FROM THE BIBLE, apart from the contemporary rhetoric and 'worship wars' which characterizes so much current thought.

Peterson begins with a thoughtful (though not entirely comprehensive...Carson's seems more thorough to me) definition of worship, and works through detailed examinations of key OT and NT passages of prescriptive and descriptive texts. I found his textual work both defensible and insightful, and his conclusions provocative and resonant with the corpus of the Scriptures.

This book, in conjunction with the recent "Worship By the Book" (edited by D.A. Carson) to be the two most useful materials on worship I have found for my preparations.

Other works which I found more narrowly useful on particular related subtopics include John Frame & Marva Dawn (useful in a David Wells-ish postmodern perspective on worshippers, although a subtle Christian Feminism perspective is noted).

Hopefully, an objective reading of Peterson and Carson will yield similar conclusions in your studies.

The Epic of Chaco : Marshall Estigarribia's Memoirs of the Chaco War, 1932-1935
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press Reprint (February, 1970)
Author: Pres. Paraguay Jose Felix Estigarribia
Average review score:

Very important for all kind of people interested in strategy
This book contains the memory of paraguayan marshal José Félix Estigarribia, wrote for his daughter Graciela Estigarribia and was dictation for her from his father, during their exile in Montevideo Uruguay, and the copyright is to Graciela inheritance of his father. His father's secretary, Pablo Max Insfrán took Graciela's manuscripts without her permission (she was phisically blind at the moment)and published it in the USA without the permission of the legitime owner, Graciela Estigarribia. Insfran did that with the help of his uncle Edgar Insfran (former represive dictator Stroessner minister of the interior) and the repressive police under the orders of his uncle. If something can be made to repair this injustice, the copyright for Graciela Estigarribia, I will be very happy and one injustice can be repaired for the family of this extraordinary paraguayan hero, marshal Estigarribia. I was personal friend of nun Graciela (she became nun of the order of the Visitation after her husband's death. She was blind but was my unforgettable french speaking teacher. She personally tells me the history I am telling now). The book is very interesting for all people interested in strategy studies (military, bussines, sports, etc. strategies) and the readers can be inspired for this wonderful genius of war Estigarribia. He talk about problem evaluation, strategical thinking, implementation of strategy, intelligence, and all things a modern strategist can be enrichised. I recommend it to all people who want to have practical aproach and who want to became true his thinking. For me is inspiration in thinking in an intelligent way and to act in an dinamic way.

Erte at Ninety-Five: The Complete New Graphics
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (September, 1989)
Authors: Marshall Lee and Erte
Average review score:

A Beautiful Book
Erte at 95 is a collection of colored prints by a wonderful artist. It's oversized (about 9x11) and the copy I've seen has many pages missing, but even without all its pages the book is a work of art in and of itself. The introduction speaks about Erte's life and methods. The rest of the book is devoted to full-page color reproductions of his prints, which run from vaguely Asian themes to double-printings that contrast to 20's art-deco. Quite a volume.
